How to Write A Best Man Speech

Put quite simply: Your best man speech is your gift to your best friend.

He has honored you by asking you be his best man and make this crucial contribution to his wedding. Your goal is to create a speech which will honor him in return (and them as a couple!), expressing what his friendship means to you. To write this speech appropriately begin by thinking back on some good times the two of you have shared.
Try to capture the essence of the bond you share and your hopes for his future. Think about their relationship and their hopes and dreams for the coming years. It is definitely worth getting some help on public speaking in general and there are many resources available for this.

Firstly Some Formalities
Depending on how formal you are planning on being there are a few traditional elements to consider.
The Father of the Bride will have thanked the guests for attending but this is certainly a good idea to repeat, along with reading any correspondence from those who could not attend. You should also thank the groom for his speech and any compliments or gifts he may have given to the bridal party (bridesmaids, ushers etc). You should then thank the bridal party for their input, compliment the bride and finally toast the bridesmaids. That’s the formal stuff.

Your Friendship Is Your Unique Perspective
Now, in putting your close bond with the groom into words, you will convey to the crowd the essence of the type of man he has always been and the type of husband he will become to his wife after their wedding. Share some anecdotes depicting him in action to renew fond memories and create new ones for the guests. Keep a balance of humor, respect and affection.

Let the Guests See the Admiration in Your Heart
As you put your friendship into words, let the people present see your admiration for who he is and has been in your life. Through your words and tone, let them see your friendship and excitement for his future plans with his bride, and your appreciation of his role in your life – and now hers of course. It’s not all about the bromance!

Use Jokes – But Be Careful!
Use of funny and tasteful jokes can lighten the atmosphere, put everyone at ease, and make your speech truly memorable.
If you wouldn’t normally consider yourself to be ‘funny’ you may not want to risk getting this wrong so don’t try too hard, but it’s definitely worth a go! Remember your audience is a range of people of different ages and backgrounds, but they are also willing you on… Be sensitive, so anything too ‘borderline’ dirty or inappropriate is not advised, and steer clear of controversial subjects, but good simple humor will almost always add to the occasion.

Conclusion: This is a Send-off into a Terrific Future
Your speech will help create a send-off for the bride and groom, into a new future full of joy and great potential. Let everyone present know how loved they are, and how much you are wishing them well as they embark on their new lives together.

Finally on behalf of everyone, toast the happy couple, and enjoy your round of applause…
